Why it's important to use Protective Hairstyles at Bedtime

When it comes to caring for our hair extensions, one aspect often overlooked is how we care for it while we sleep.

Let's discuss why incorporating protective hairstyles into our bedtime routine is about more than just preserving style—it's about prioritising the health of our natural hair and hair extensions.

  1. Reducing Hair Breakage and Damage

The nightly tossing and turning can wreak havoc on your natural hair and Hair Extensions, causing breakage and damage. Friction between your strands and the pillowcase leads to pesky tangles, knots, and split ends if hair is left untied. However, opting for protective hairstyles such as braids, twists, or a low bun can help create a protective barrier, shielding your locks from excessive friction. This not only preserves the strength and integrity of your natural hair and hair extensions, but also enhances its overall health, locking in natural oils. Better yet, for added protection, purchase a silk pillowcase (purchase from us in salon or on our online store). These allow the hair which is expose to glide more smoothly through sleep. They are also good for your skin.

  2. Retaining Moisture

Many of us waking up to dry, unruly hair, particularly in dry climates or if blessed with textured locks…adding to this with textured hair extensions. Wrapping your hair in a protective style before bedtime acts as a moisture sealant, preventing moisture loss overnight. This results in softer, more manageable hair in the morning, reducing reliance on excessive styling products. We recommend adding a little bit of Wella Lux Oil at night to aid moisture lock in and dry extensions. Purchase online or instore – it also smells divine!

  3. Fostering Hair Growth

Healthy hair growth starts from the roots, and adopting protective hairstyles at bedtime can bolster scalp health in multiple ways. By minimising friction and stress on the hair follicles, protective styles create an ideal environment for natural hair growth. Additionally, keeping your hair extensions neatly secured at night can ward off tangling and matting.

  4. Night-time Hair Practices to Avoid

Always ensure your hair is completely dry before hitting the hay; wet hair extensions can be incredibly fragile. Hair is more susceptible to breakage and snapping when wet, so it's vital to ensure your strands are dry before bedtime. Also, due to the structure of hair extensions, wet hair is a breeding ground for bacteria which can be detrimental to scalp and your natural follicle hair health.

Tips for Wearing Protective Hairstyles to Bed

To optimise the benefits of your protective hairstyles at night, here are some key tips to consider:

  • Choose the Right Style: We usually recommend a low plait, however you can be creative which can help with creating different styles upon waking. Just ensure all styles are kept low so the natural follicle direction is kept (so not tying hair on top of the head to sleep for example).

  • Opt for Silk Pillowcases: Swap your cotton pillowcase for a silk one to reduce friction, minimizing breakage and preserving your hairstyle.

  • Protect Your Edges: If you experience breakage around your hairline, use a silk scarf or bonnet to shield your edges while you sleep. This is particularly important for areas where thinner hair may rub on hair extensions bonds. Keep It Loose: While securing your hair is essential, avoid overly tight styles to prevent tension and potential damage to your hair and scalp. This added to the additional weight of hair extensions can cause Traction alopecia.

  • Gentle Brushing: Before bedtime, ensure your hair extensions are gently and correctly brushed to prevent knots and tangles. We recommend using our Vixen Hair Extension Brush, designed to be gentle on the scalp and minimise shedding.

Your hair will thank you for these night-time care practices come morning.
