How to Take Care of Curly Hair Extensions

Do you want a fantastic curly hairdo that is both gorgeous and long-lasting? After you have purchased a high-quality curly hair extension, you must pay close attention to its maintenance. Since curly hair extensions are high maintenance, they require a good care regimen to keep the texture and curls intact. We will share key principles for taking care of curly hair extensions.

What are Curly Hair Extensions?

CurlyExtensions are extensions where we have added a kink profile (see above the image showing the different kink profile options). Adding a ‘Kink Profile’ means the chemical processing of Virgin Remy Human hair extensions to achieve a certain curly texture (generally as close to you own natural kink as possible). They can be used for a full head of curls or for accenting certain sections of the hair.

What Are the Benefits of Curly Hair Extensions?

Curly hair extensions allow customers with naturally curly hair to select extensions that closely match their own texture. This will allow for better blending when the extensions have not been styled (for example, Straight hair extensions on a head with a tight curl can look unmatched and odd)

How to Take Care of Curly Hair Extensions

Due to the additional processing of the hair extension and the ‘curly / wavy / afro’ nature of the chemical processing to achieve a kink profile, Curly Hair Extensions require a more vigorous care regime. Here are some principles and advice from us professionals on caring for curly hair extensions so that they stay in healthy condition.

1. Comb with fingers

The first and most critical step in caring for curly hair extensions that perplexes everyone is learning how to brush them properly. Curly hair extensions require gentle love and attention to maintain their curl pattern and shape. Never brush your curly hair extensions while they are dry, as this could cause frizzing, breakage, shedding, and a loss of their curl pattern. A little-known trick is that rubbing your fingers through your curls works better than using a brush to detangle them. To care for curly hair extensions, avoid brushing them when they are dry, since this may create frizzing and other problems. To minimise breakage, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your extensions when they are damp and thoroughly hydrated. You must begin at the bottom and work your way up. Another thing to remember is to comb in the downward direction of the hair. Do not comb your hair side by side, upward, or in any other direction to avoid messing with your hair. If you find that your hair extensions are tangling, first try and finger comb any knots and tangles from the bottom of the wefts up. If they are still tangled, try co washing them, then use a wide tooth comb to gently remove tangles from bottom to top (see below).

2. Skip daily washing

Washing your hair daily to keep it clean and looking fabulous is excellent for natural hair. However, you should not use this method to care for curly hair extensions. The biggest reason to avoid washing hair extensions daily is that it might strain and stress out fragile strands and dry out thirsty curls. Following that, you need only shampoo your hair extensions once a week, if not fortnightly. Another great technique is ‘Co-Washing’. Co-washing stands for “conditioner only washing”. When co washing, you literally only use a conditioner and no shampoo to wash your hair extensions. Co-washing is a great way to cleanse drier hair types, including curly hair extensions, to restore moisture and softness without stripping the hair using harsh soaps or lathering agents generally found in shampoos. When co-washing your natural hair extensions, be sure to use a mositurising conditioner that is silicone-free, and that is moisture-based, not protein-based. Simply get the hair extensions sopping wet, apply a liberal amount of conditioner from root to tip, and gently cleanse the hair strands. If your hair extensions are feeling particularly dry, you can leave the conditioner on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off.

3. Use moisturisers and conditioners

Regularly moisturise your hair extensions with a genuinely moisturising shampoo and conditioner. If you wish to retain moisture in the hair for as long as possible, you should use a silicone-based conditioner that quickly penetrates the extensions. The hair products you use on your curly hair extensions are just as important as the ones you used on your natural hair. Just like natural curly hair is prone to dryness and frizz, so are your hair extensions. Because curly hair extensions do not have the benefit of receiving natural oils from the scalp, they are prone to dryness, tangling, and frizzing. Using deeply moisturizing products with ingredients like shea butter is a good way to restore moisture, softness, and shine. When choosing a mositurising shampoo and conditioner, opt for alcohol and sulfate-free products (these ingredients are super drying), and avoid products with proteins. Silicone-based conditioners are great for curly extensions. Although protein-rich products can revive curl definition and restore balance to natural curly hair, these may make your curly hair extensions matted and tangled and are not recommended for use. Leave-in conditioners and serums can do wonders to maintain moisture, shine, and nourishment. As mentioned before, clip in hair extensions get dry easily because of the lack of natural oils from the scalp. Using a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner on the extensions can help ensure that the hair stays moisturized and prolong their lifespan. To avoid dryness, you should use a hair mask once a month or so. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before washing out. You will notice the difference after using it on your hair. Condition the hair with a mixture made using ½ tablespoon of olive oil, 1 egg, and ¼ cup of milk, which will make your hair shiny and soft.

4. Avoid scrubbing and soaking

The best way to take care of curly hair extensions is to avoid scrubbing them when washing. You should avoid getting it wet as much as possible and use a towel to absorb the moisture after washing it (pat dry gently).

5.Protect your extensions during sleep

Use a satin scarf to protect your hair during sleep. A satin pillowcase is excellent, but you can also use a satin scarf as an alternative. It will protect your hair and reduce frizzing of your hair. Even if you sleep without a satin pillowcase, you can use a satin scarf to cover your hair. However, the best alternative would be to remove your extensions before sleeping.

6. Avoid hairsprays and mousse

Using hair sprays and mousses is not suitable for heavily treated hair. If you use them regularly, you might end up with sticky, stiff and greasy hair. Instead, you should opt for a light leave-in conditioner (as above).

7. Minimise heat damage

You need to keep your hair extensions as cool as possible to avoid heat damage, which is one of the most common issues for curly hair extensions. Use the right tools to avoid heat damage to your hair, such as flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers. Using the lowest heat setting possible. The best way to extend the life of your curly hair extension is to avoid overusing heat. As a result, you will not have to deal with burnt out curls and damaged hair.

8. Keep the scalp cleansed

The most common cause of dry, frizzy curls is the accumulation of product and dirt on the scalp and hair strands. To prevent this from happening, you need to cleanse and moisturise your scalp regularly. Doing so will keep the scalp clean and healthy and provide the optimal environment for healthy and thick hair growth.

9. Dry your hair gently with a cotton t-shirt

Dry your hair gently with a cotton t-shirt and scrunch the excess water. If you massage your hair with a rough cloth, the cuticles will open, and your hair will become frizzy. Then, allow to air dry. To further avoid frizziness after drying, apply leave-in curly hair treatments like curl activating cream or just leave some argan oil in (which we will give you a small bottle). Do not, under any circumstances, interfere with your curls while they are drying! Playing with them or running your fingers through them might cause them to frizz up, which is the last thing you want. If you’re short on time, you can dry your hair with a diffuser. Flip your head upside down and hold the diffuser securely to your scalp—don’t move it around too much because the escaping wind might generate frizz in your hair. Be sure to use a diffuser and to use the lowest heat setting on the blow dryer.

10. Avoid touching your hair

The more you play with your hair, the more you will suck the moisture out of them, break up the curls, and create frizz. Although running your fingers through silky soft long hair is tempting, leave your hair extensions be when in, especially if freshly washed. You don’t want all your hard work to go to waste!

11. Separate the bonds daily

Last but not least, you must guarantee that you take the time each day to separate your bonds. While this may appear to be a time-consuming and laborious task, it only takes a few minutes and will take much less time if done daily. You won’t need any instruments for this; simply use your fingertips to feel each link and ensure that none has been knotted. If they have, attempt to separate them as thoroughly as possible – you may need to use a tiny brush or comb to do so. By keeping the connections apart at all times, you can keep the extensions from being matted against any loose or shedding hair.

12. Take care in the rain

Have you ever stepped outside when it’s drizzling only for your natural hair to turn into a frizzball? The reason why curly hair and rain or damp weather don’t get along is because curly hair is naturally dry. When you go outside and the air is filled with moisture, curly hair sucks it all in, causing frizz. If your hair is moisturized enough with serums and leave-in products, you may be able to get away with a less harsh effect. If you’ll be stepping out in the rain, first apply a tiny bit of smoothening serum, or spritz a little bit of leave-in conditioner spray. If you can, wear a silk scarf over your hair and try to protect the hair strands from getting wet as much as possible!

Conclusion

Curly hair extensions are expensive, so you must take good care of them to have a long-lasting and great looking hairstyle. You should take a few minutes every day to care for your curly hair extensions by using the tips shared in this post.
