The cuticles in our natural hair all face downwards – Remy hair follicles all go in one single direction, which is also down towards the tip. Remy human hair is hair that is collected and sorted from one donor with the root to tip traveling in the same direction. This is so that all hair strands stay aligned in the same, natural direction that it grew in to maintain the natural texture pattern and cuticle direction of the hair. This is a time consuming process and is one of the main reasons why Remy hair is more expensive than non-Remy hair.
Non-Remy human hair is less expensive than Remy human hair which is one of the reasons why non-Remy hair is so popular - however is generally not the best choice when it comes to hair extensions. Non-Remy hair is hair that is also collected from multiple sources but, there is no guarantee that the root and tip ends are travelling in the same direction like with Remy human hair. With this kind of hair, cuticle directions become mixed which causes inevitable shedding, tangling and matting issues.
Non-Remy human hair must be processed to remove a portion of the cuticle as this prevents the hair from tangling with surrounding hair, for a period of time. Manufacturers will put silicone on the hair to make it appear shiny and glossy but once the hair is washed, the silicone wears off and the hair begins to matte.
